You've got a rush job. A client added an order at the last minute, a shipment arrived with the wrong spec, or a production line is down. Whatever the reason, you don't have the luxury of a week-long material evaluation.
In my role coordinating emergency material sourcing at an industrial supply company, I've handled over 200 rush orders in the last four years alone. Some same-day turnarounds for critical manufacturing clients. A few where the penalty for missing the deadline was a five-figure contract clawback.

Don't evaluate a dozen materials. Most applications come down to two or three common options. For example:
- Polypropylene (PP) vs Polycarbonate (PC) — This is a classic choice. PP is cheaper, chemical-resistant, and flexible, but it has lower impact strength and heat resistance. PC is tougher, clearer, and handles higher temperatures, but it can be overkill for non-demanding applications.
- ABS vs. Acrylic — ABS (like what INEOS Styrolution produces) is tough and easy to machine. Acrylic is clearer but more brittle. If you need impact resistance and fast delivery, ABS often wins.
I assumed 'same specifications' meant identical results across vendors for polycarbonate sheets last year. Didn't verify. Turned out each had slightly different UV stabilization, and the cheaper batch yellowed in six months. The $500 savings cost $3,000 in replacements.
Step 3: Verify Availability — Not Just 'In Stock'
When time is critical, a material that's "in stock" but takes two weeks to ship is useless. Here's what I check daily:
- Lead time to my dock — Not the vendor's warehouse.
- Form factor — Is it available in the exact shape, size, or thickness I need? If I need a sheet and they only have pellets, that's a delay.
- Minimum order quantity — Can I buy exactly what I need? Last quarter, a client needed just 50 lbs of a specific ABS grade. The minimum was 500 lbs. We found an alternative spec with a lower MOQ from the same INEOS supply chain.

Hit 'confirm' on a purchase order and immediately think 'did I just make a mistake?' That's normal. The three days until delivery on a custom ABS order for a client who needed it for a product launch last June were stressful. Common Mistakes When You're in a Rush
The 'Local Is Always Faster' Trap
I used to assume a nearby vendor would be faster for urgent material needs. This was true 10 years ago when local sourcing was the only way to get a custom sheet or resin quickly. Today, a well-organized remote supplier with good logistics can often beat a less-organized local one. The 'Spec Is the Spec' Trap
A material spec from one manufacturer doesn't always match another's exactly. Especially with specialty polymers. INEOS Styrolution's ABS might have slightly different melt flow properties than a competitor's equivalent grade. Don't assume they're interchangeable without checking.
Every cost analysis I've done for polypropylene vs polycarbonate says PC is more expensive. Something always felt off when a client pushed for PC on a warm indoor application. The vendor who claims to be a one-stop shop for every plastic, rubber, and specialty resin? I'm skeptical. A specialist who knows their limits beats a generalist who overpromises every time. When you need to avoid a 'burning rubber' problem from a material that degrades under heat, you want the specialist who lives and breathes high-temperature elastomers. Not the generalist who stocks everything but knows little about each.
This 5-step checklist isn't perfect. But it's practical. Follow it when you're under pressure, and a few days later you'll be relaxed rather than explaining a costly mistake to your boss.
