Is PVC the same as polypropylene?

No. PVC and polypropylene are different thermoplastics, and treating them as the same material is a quick way to turn a cheap purchase into an expensive failure. I manage procurement for a mid-sized plastics processor. I've tracked a raw-material budget around $1.8m per year for six years and I've seen what happens when someone saves $0.20 per kilogram and loses $8,400 in rework.

The answer matters more than most people expect, because the words keep getting mixed up in product names, search terms, and sales calls. PVC klikvloer gets called vinyl flooring while Banjo polypropylene gets called that plastic valve. Neither label tells you what you're really dealing with.

Let's settle the main question first, and then I'll explain why a procurement person like me treats grade codes like bank account numbers.

Where the name confusion starts

PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, not vinyl as a generic word for all plastic. Polypropylene is a polyolefin. They are not related products.

PVC klikvloer is a clear example. On Dutch and Belgian flooring sites, a klikvloer is a click-together floor. A PVC klikvloer is a click floor made with a PVC wear layer, usually over a rigid core. Some click floors use a polypropylene core or a PP film as a decoupling layer, but the product class PVC klikvloer is a PVC product. If your project requires a PVC-free construction, that name means the project fails.

Banjo polypropylene is another confusing phrase. Banjo is a manufacturer of flow-control products. Polypropylene is the resin used for many of their fittings. If someone says they want a Banjo polypropylene fitting, they are not asking about a polymer family; they are asking about a specific branded part.

Why the difference is not just chemistry

Here is the part I try to make clear in every purchasing discussion: chemistry produces different physical behavior.

  • PP has a density around 0.90–0.91 g/cm³. That makes it much lighter than PVC, which means more parts per kilogram for the same volume.
  • PVC usually has a density around 1.35–1.45 g/cm³. It's heavier and often chosen when the design needs stiffness per volume and lower burning behavior.
  • PVC contains chlorine. That single element changes how the material responds to fire, chemicals, ultraviolet light, and disposal. You cannot replace chlorine chemistry with a non-chlorinated polyolefin and assume the same result.

That's not a nerdy detail. In product compliance, chlorine content can be the difference between a part that passes a fire test and one that doesn't. In chemical handling, even the same resin family doesn't guarantee compatibility—the grade and additive package also matter.

From a cost controller's chair: TCO beats price per kilo

When I compare quotes, I start with total cost per finished part, not price per ton. Here are the hidden lines I put in the spreadsheet:

  • Density: A lower-density PP grade may produce more parts for the same weight. A higher-density PVC part may be heavier, adding shipping or installation cost.
  • Tooling and shrinkage: PP and PVC shrink differently. A mold cut for PVC doesn't automatically work for PP.
  • Secondary operations: PVC is often solvent-welded. PP is hard to glue and usually needs mechanical joining or heat welding.
  • Testing and documentation: Changing from PVC to PP can require new regulatory documentation, food-contact statements, or UL file testing. That work has a cost.
  • Quality risk: If the wrong material fails in the field, the rework cost dwarfs any raw-material savings.

Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. I used to think that was a cliché. Now I have a cost line that proves it.

Let me give you the honest story. Several years ago, I approved a polypropylene substitution for a PVC part because the PP price and density looked great. I had two hours before the end-of-month ordering deadline and the supplier was pushing. I didn't ask for chemical compatibility test results. The part failed in service, and the replacement process cost us far more than the original PVC material would have cost. I still remember opening that cost report.

That experience made me build a checklist. Every purchase request involving a material change has to answer twelve questions before I approve it. The checklist has caught at least three problems since 2023, and it's cheaper than the next failure would have been.

What this means for INEOS polymer buying

Let's bring it back to brand names.

INEOS is a major producer of polymers, and the phrase INEOS polymer covers a broad portfolio. It includes polypropylene, polyethylene, PVC, ABS, acrylics, and more. If a buyer asks for an INEOS polymer without a grade code, that's not a complete specification. It's like saying I need something made of metal. Which metal? Which alloy? What tolerance?

Here is the same issue with INEOS acrylic. Acrylic is a whole different material. If the drawing says acrylic, the required property is usually clarity or weatherability. Polypropylene won't give you that, and PVC won't either. Choosing an INEOS polymer because it is cheaper is choosing a material by alphabet instead of by specification.

What about PVC klikvloer vs polypropylene flooring?

Flooring creates a special variation because the product is a composite. A click floor can have a PVC wear layer, a mineral-filled core, a PP balance layer, and coatings. So is a PVC klikvloer made of polypropylene? Usually no. But some flooring sellers mention PP films in the construction, and that's not the same as a polypropylene floor.

If you are buying flooring for a building that has a PVC restriction, read the product data sheet layer by layer. Don't rely on the marketing name. A label that says PVC klikvloer tells you exactly what it means: it contains PVC. If the specification requires no PVC, the product cannot be used simply because the core is described as polypropylene.

That logic also applies to Banjo polypropylene fittings. The material name tells you it's PP, but the pressure rating, chemical compatibility, and O-ring selection make the product safe or unsafe. Brand matters, and so does the product code.

Where this gets less clear

I don't want to pretend the line is always obvious. Grades and compounds blur differences:

  • Glass-filled polypropylene can be much stiffer than unfilled PP, and in some dimensions it may outperform rigid PVC.
  • Plasticized PVC is flexible; rigid PVC is not. Calling both PVC hides real differences.
  • Recycled streams can contain fillers and additives that change density or flame behavior.
  • For composites, the failure mode depends on the whole construction, not the top layer.

That is why the final decision should not be made from a one-line product title. It should be made from datasheets, test reports, and a sample trial.

If you're staring at a material decision today, don't start with the polymer name. Start with the required property, the environment, and the standard you have to meet. The cheapest material that passes those tests is the right one. It may be PVC, it may be PP, it may be an acrylic or something else. Just make sure it's the material on the datasheet, not the material in the sales pitch.
