How a "Simple" HDPE Board Order Became a $1,200 Lesson
Last March, our production manager walked into my office with what looked like a straightforward request. He needed HDPE boards, abrasive rubber wheels, and ABS sheets for a custom fabrication project in the west bay of our plant.

For context, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is one of the most widely used engineering thermoplastics, and INEOS Styrolution is one of the biggest names in that space. But "ABS" alone doesn't tell you the grade. Different grades have different impact strength, heat resistance, and flow properties. - Confirm lead time in writing. Then add 3-5 business days of buffer.
5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. That's the whole lesson.

If you're managing industrial materials purchases and you don't have a chemical engineering background, be honest about what you don't know. The people using the materials are your best resource—ask them what specs matter before you call suppliers.
And if you're tempted to skip the verification step because it's "basically the same as last time"—it isn't. I saved $300 on that budget vendor. I then spent $1,200 fixing the consequences. The math doesn't need a spreadsheet.
