Before you ask 'polyethylene or silicone?', ask what the part must do. What temperature will it see? What chemicals will it touch? Does it need to be clear? Is it welded, overmolded, or bonded? The material should answer those questions. If the part must survive steam sterilization repeatedly, silicone is likely a better starting point. If you need a rigid chemical storage tank, polyethylene might be more practical. Neither is better in general; they are different tools.

Step 2: Verify the form: HDPE powder vs. pellets

Most people order a grade number and assume the form is part of the grade. It is not. HDPE powder behaves differently in a hopper, a blender, and a rotomolding oven than HDPE pellet. Particle size distribution affects flow and sintering. Bulk density affects batch weight. I made a version of this mistake in 2017, when I thought 'fine' was a specification. In September 2022, I repeated the same core error on a larger scale. A phone screen and a printed fan deck are two different devices. According to Pantone Color Matching System guidelines, the target for brand-critical colors is generally Delta E less than 2. Delta E of 2 to 4 is noticeable to trained observers, and above 4 is visible to most people. A monitor cannot guarantee that.

Looking back, I should have sent a physical chip. At the time, the Pantone reference seemed enough. It was not. The first batch came out blue-gray instead of navy. We wasted $3,200 in tinting compounds and repaint time. Now my rule is simple: if the buyer says 'match this color,' I ask for a physical sample or an approved chip. I use the Pantone reference as a cross-check, not as the only standard.

Step 4: Ask for product-specific sustainability documentation

In high-temperature gaskets, many silicone grades can handle continuous heat above 150°C, which many polyethylene grades cannot. If you need a flexible tube that gets sterilized repeatedly, silicone is probably the right direction. If you need an injection-molded part with tight tolerances and low cost, polyethylene is often a better candidate.

Step 6: Do the fifteen-minute final review

After the third rejection in Q1 2024, I created a pre-check list for every industrial polymer order. It has six questions:

  • Grade number confirmed against the production process?
  • Form and particle size confirmed?
  • Melt flow or density range confirmed?
  • Physical color standard available?
  • Product-specific environmental documentation included?
  • Lead time in writing?

The review takes about fifteen minutes. It has caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months. Even after I approve an order, I sometimes second-guess: did I include the right colorant ratio? The two weeks until delivery are stressful. Usually the COA helps me relax. If it does not match the order, I do not unload the truck before technical support answers.

Three Mistakes I Still See (Because I Made Them Myself)

  1. Assuming that 'the same as last time' is a specification. It is not.
  2. Trusting verbal promises about delivery. The one time I skipped written confirmation was the one time the date slipped by three weeks.
  3. Choosing a material by category instead of by property. 'Silicone' or 'polyethylene' is not a spec; the property is.
