“Resin clay” is a perfect example of what not to do. A designer once asked me for “resin clay” for a prototype. I asked for specifics; she meant a two-part acrylic casting resin. If I'd just searched the phrase and ordered the first product, we'd have wasted $800 on the wrong material. A generic label is not a spec.

Before you contact any supplier, you need to know:

  • Exact product grade or trade name
  • Technical datasheet and safety data sheet
  • Required processing method (injection molding, machining, casting, etc.)

If you don't have these, ask. Any reputable INEOS distributor will help you identify the right grade. That's part of their job.

Step 3: Verify recyclability and sustainability claims

One question I hear constantly: can PVC pipe be recycled? The short answer is yes, but not through a regular curbside bin. PVC needs a dedicated recycling stream. According to the Vinyl Institute (vinylinfo.org), there is a network of specialized reclaimers in the U.S. that accept post-industrial and post-consumer PVC. If your project involves PVC pipe, check for a local program before finalizing the spec.

On the sustainability side, INEOS publishes regular updates. In its 2024 sustainability reporting, the company discusses circular economy progress. That doesn't mean every product is equally “green.” It means you should ask for data behind any environmental claim.

Step 4: Get processing and machining input early

Machining polypropylene taught me this one the hard way. Polypropylene is lightweight and chemical-resistant, but it's soft and has a low melting point. This step is easy to skip when you're chasing a deadline, but I've seen the cost of skipping it: a $600 redo on a production run. A pilot is always cheaper than a correction.

Common mistakes I've made (and you can avoid)

  • Assuming all grades of a polymer family are interchangeable—they're not.
  • Forgetting to verify regional recycling for PVC. Just because it's recyclable theoretically doesn't mean your waste hauler accepts it.
  • Comparing only unit price. Total cost includes machining, rejects, compliance documentation, and disposal.
  • Skipping the pilot order. I've done it. I won't again.

This checklist reflects what I've learned as of March 2025. Material portfolio and recycling programs change quickly, so always verify current availability and regulations with official sources. But the core principles—ask for exact specs, validate the supplier, test before scaling—are built to last.
