From the outside, it looks like plastic pipe is just plastic pipe—cheap, flexible, easy to install. The reality is that polymers have vastly different mechanical properties, and choosing the wrong one can cost you thousands in rework. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later.

Since my mistake, I've started asking three questions before any pipe order:

  1. What are the ground conditions? (Freeze-thaw? Clay? Drainage zone?)
  2. What's the pressure rating requirement? (Gravity flow vs. pressurized?)
  3. Has the contractor explicitly specified a material standard? (ASTM D3034 PVC vs. ASTM D3350 HDPE?)

For our most recent project—a small detention basin outfall line—I specified HDPE based on the geotechnical report. It cost more upfront, but the contractor told us it'll outlast the building. That's the kind of decision I can justify to finance.
